How to Jump serve a Volleyball

By Peter-Daniel

One of the possible serves that starts a rally in volleyball. It is similar to a spike from the back line.

Step 1:
Start about 5-7 steps away from the end line.

Step 2:
Using your 'hitting hand, toss the volleyball up approximately 8-10 feet above your head, and slightly in front of you. Ideally if you watch the ball is should land just behind the end line.

Step 3:
Toss the volleyball up. Wait until the ball teaches its peak height. Take your approach. Twist your torso in a 90 degree angle and jump with your momentum forward. You should be landing just in front of the end line.

Step 4:
Bring you arm back behind you head bend you elbow about 90 degrees. Your hand should be just behind your head before you swing.

Step 5:
When you swing, you want to make contact with the ball about 4-6 inches in front of you, with your arm fully extended above your head. Make sure you to watch the volleyball at all times.

Step 6:
When you hand contacts the volleyball, hit the upper portion of the ball close to the top. snap your wrist down. ( doing this adds topspin )

Step 7: Twist you torso so it is aligned with the volleyball to keep is from going out on the sides of the court.

Note:
There are different types of jump serves. Another popular type being the jump 'floater. The main difference is that in step 6. You will want to hit the volleyball dead center and keep your hand stiff as not to and any spin.
